Publication of scientists from the Faculty of Chemistry, Rzeszów University of Technology - Joanna Nizioł, PhD, and Prof. Tomasz Ruman - was awarded in a prestigious specialist scientific journal
The publication authored by Joanna Nizioł, PhD, and Prof. Tomasz Ruman, scientists from the Department of Chemistry, Rzeszów University of Technology, was recognized in a prestigious specialized scientific journal. The publication "Metabolomic and elemental profiling of human tissue in kidney cancer" was the second 2021 most read work in the journal "Metabolomics" (vol. 17, article no. 30).
The journal
"Metabolomics" is a peer-reviewed scientific journal with an impact factor of 4.290 (100 MEiN points) published since 2005 by Springer Publishing (USA), whose editor-in-chief is Professor Roy Goodacre from the University of Liverpool (UK). Every year the journal has distinguished two best original scientific articles and two review papers. The article authored by the scientists from Rzeszów University of Technology was selected from over a hundred publications submitted to this journal every year.
Publication of scientists from Rzeszów University of Technology
The research conducted by Joanna Nizioł, PhD, and Prof. Tomasz Ruman described in the paper "Metabolomic and elemental profiling of human tissue in kidney cancer" included the search for potential biomarkers of kidney cancer using many analytical techniques, including inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) . The instrumental results obtained for patients diagnosed with renal cancer were analyzed with the use of advanced statistical techniques.
It is worth mentioning that the work contains the laser mass spectrometry results based on methods developed entirely by the team of Prof. T. Ruman. The publication is an effect of the international cooperation with scientists from Rzeszów University of Technology with scientists from the USA (Dr. Valérie Copié, Brian P. Tripet, Montana State University), Brazil (Leonardo B. Nogueira and Katiane OPC Nogueira, UFOP, Ouro Preto) and leading group of Polish urologists (Kszysztof Ossoliński, Anna Ossolińska and Tadeusz Ossoliński, John Paul II Hospital in Kolbuszowa).
Kidney cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed and deadly cancers of the urinary system. Despite the advances in treatment, no specific biomarker is currently used in routine clinical practice. The aim of the research is to find and develop the structure of new small-molecule neoplastic tumor markers of kidney cancer, which would facilitate early cancer detection and enable monitoring of treatment effectiveness.
The publication was produced thanks to funding from the National Science Center under the OPUS 2016/23 / B / ST4 / 00062 grant.
